FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) are customizable devices, made out of a network of customizable logic blocks (CLBs) that are linked via programming. The FPGAs have to be programmed by the developer to better suit their needs. This allows for non-recurring engineering costs, as well as the ability to easily reprogram to fix bugs should they occur.

FPGA Programming

FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) programming is the process of creating hardware that is able to execute instructions based on the software of the component. Only limited by the data type, this provides a high level of flexibility, and can be used to carry out programs that would normally be too time-consuming or complex for regular CPUs to handle. Common programming languages used for this process are VHDL and Verilog.
